$25 Tickets To Wicked At The Pantages @Wicked_musical #Wicked @Pantages

I'm so excited to be invited to take my daughter to the opening night of Wicked at The Pantages Theatre here in Los Angeles. My 10 year old daughter thinks she has out grown The Wizard of OZ, but I'm pretty confident this musical about the young witches of Oz will bring all the magic back to her.

The show runs December 10th through March 15th. I know money can get a bit tight around the holidays. Looks like The Pantages knows that too, because they are making some same day tickets available for just $25 if you win the lottery.

The producers are announcing that a day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of $25 orchestra seats will be held daily. Entries will be accepted at the box office beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance; each person will print their name and the number of tickets (1 or 2) they wish to purchase on a card that is provided. Two hours before curtain, names will be drawn at random for a limited number of tickets priced at $25 each; cash only. Only one entry is allowed per person. Cards are checked for duplication prior to drawing. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing and show valid ID to purchase tickets. Limit one entry per person and two tickets per winner. Tickets are subject to availability.

Kinky Boots Opens Tonight at Pantages Theatre @Pantages #KinkyBoots

Kinky Boots open at The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles tonight and I'm very excited to be going. This play is based on a true story and was previously a great film of the same name in 2005. It's the story of a boy who owns a troubled shoe factory and the drag queen he saved who then saved him right back.

The play version has been a smash hit and won the 2013 best musical Tony Award. I've been hoping I'd get a chance to see it in it's LA run, so you can imagine how happy I was to get a surprise invitation this afternoon to attend. The score is by Cyndi Lauper, the book by Harvey Fierstein, and direction from Jerry Mitchell. Talk about dream teams! I'm ready for an amazing night.

Historic El Capitan Theatre Tour @elcapitanthtre #MyDayInLA

Interior of  El Capitan Theatre Hollywood

Beginning October 10th the historic El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd is providing Disney Movie Palace & Backstage tours, including front of house, back stage and even below stage. These great old movie houses have so many amazing stories to tell. This is a great addition to our LA tours.

El Capitan Theatre door frame at entrance. Now that's a door JAM
The tour begins giving you details about the original theatre which ran plays. Location, location, location, was the mantra of actors who worked at the El Capitan in those days, as the Masonic Temple members next door often attended plays and their roles included Louis B Mayer and other big wigs in Hollywood. Landing a part in a play at The El Capitan could be your first step to a studio contract. Legendary stars Clark Gable, Buster Keaton, Mary Pickford, Joan Fontaine, Henry Fonda and Will Rogers have all graced the El Capitan stage.

El Capitan Theatre ceiling decoration

Built in 1926 by Charles Toberman and Sid Grauman, the second of their three exotically themed theatres the others being Graumans (now TCL) Chinese Theatre and The Egypatian, all on Hollywood Blvd. Toberman often called "The Father of Hollywood" played a role in developing over 30 buildings in the heart of Hollywood, including the Roosevelt Hotel and the Hollywood Masonic Temple (now the El Capitan Entertainment Centre, home to ABC's late night talk show, JimmyKimmel Live!).

El Capitan Theatre Wall of Fame
The theatre continued running plays until 1941 when Orson Wells was looking for an independent theatre to have the premiere for Citizen Kane. After the premiere they decided to switch to film and after a 9 month renovation reopen in 1942 as the Hollywood Paramount. The theatre owners had boarded over the original East Indian inspired decor and replace it with Art Modern, which is more or less how it stayed as it changed hands multiple times over the next 45+ years.

El Capitan Theatre Replica Light Fixtures

In 1989 Walt Disney Company and Pacific Theatres launched a major renovation, returning the theatre to it's original glory. They were able to restore much of the original interior that still existed behind the boarding, everything else they reconstructed from photographs. They were able to match paint colors exactly by scraping the existing paint and matching it with microscopes! After 2 years the El Capitan reopened in 1991 with the premiere of The Rocketeer.

El Capitan Theatre Down Stairs Lounge all original. Used for displays and after parties
Times and Prices

30 minute tour is $15 and begins at 8:30am. This includes a history of Hollywood and the El Capitan, full access behind-the-scenes of the theatre, including the Sherman Brothers Star Dressing Room, named for the composers of such Disney songs as “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “It’s a Small World,” an opportunity to take a photo with the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, and a full viewing of the curtain show.
15 minute express tour runs throughout the day and is $5. This includes the history of the theatre, a visit to the Wall of Fame, and a tour of the lobby areas.

For more information, details and options, visit the El Capitan Theatre Box Office, call 1-800-Disney6, or check the El Capitan Tour Website.

El Capitan Theatre organ

I believe the El Capitan Theatre is the only theatre on Hollywood Blvd with an organ. This one was original to a 1920s Fox theatre in San Francisco. It is the top of the line with all the bells and whistles as they say. It rises from the floor before screenings and is played beautifully. I hope to one day see a silent film in the El Capitan Theatre accompanied by it.

Angela Lansbury In Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit @CTGLA #TCMParty #LA

Ticket's go on sale tomorrow for Angela Lansbury's Tony Award winning Blithe Spirit at The Center Theatre Groups Ahmanson Theatre here in LA. The show will run December 9- January 19. This is definitely a must see theatre production.

Blithe spirit is a Noel Coward comedic play that originally opened on Broadway in 1941. It has had several revivals. The premise as described by Center Theatre Group: Researching for his new novel, Charles Condomine (Charles Edwards AKA the ill fated Michael Gregson on Downton Abbey) invites the implausible medium Madame Arcati (Angela Lansbury) to his house for a séance. While consumed in a trance, Madame Arcati unwittingly summons the ghost of Charles’ dead wife Elvira. Appearing only to Charles, Elvira soon makes a play to reclaim her husband, much to the chagrin of Charles’ new wife Ruth. One husband, two feuding wives and a whisper of mischief in the air – who will win in Coward’s unworldly comedy?

Angela won a Tony for her performance in Blithe Spirit in 2009. Her supporting cast have all starred along side her in either the 2009 Broadway production or Angela's more resent run of Blithe Spirit in 2014 on the West End in London.

This is Angela Lansbury's first time doing a play in Los Angeles in 30 years. So don't miss it. Who knows when she'll make it back out to us.

Tickets for Blithe Spirit go on sale September 24 and are available by calling (213) 972-4400, visiting www.CenterTheatreGroup.org, or in person at the Center Theatre Group box office at the Ahmanson Theatre.

We Will Rock You at The Ahmanson #LA @CTGLA

We Will Rock You Opens at the Ahmanson tonight and I'm excited to be invited. It will run through August 24. This play was a long running hit (11years) in the West End and won the Olivier Audience Award in 2011. It features 24 hits from the Band Queen

I get the sense there is a carnival atmosphere to this show as audience members are encouraged to wear their concert t-shirts, download lighter apps, and drinks are allowed to be brought into the auditorium. The show is described as "set in the future on a planet once called Earth that is now controlled by a big corporation. Computer-generated music reigns, no rock music is heard, all musical instruments are banned and conformity is enforced. A pair of young renegades, Galileo and Scaramouche, dare to break free and bring the power of rock back to the people."

This instructional video will tell you everything you need to know.

Tickets for “We Will Rock You” are available by calling (213) 972-4400, visiting online
at www.CenterTheatreGroup.org, or in person at the Center Theatre Group box office at the
Ahmanson Theatre. Tickets range from $25 - $120 (ticket prices are subject to change).

The Ahmanson Theatre is located at the Music Center, 135 N. Grand Avenue in Downtown L.A.
90012.

Dixie's Tupperware Party at The Geffen Playhouse #LA @GeffenPlayhouse

Dixie's Tupperware Party opened last night at The Geffen Playhouse. Here's our review by Audra Crane.

Join fast-talking Dixie Longate for a raunchy romp wrapped in a Tupperware party. Dixie rocks peak 50s fashion as a thrice divorced Alabama mother of three, including little Absorbine, who has found her power and passion through throwing the world’s best boozy Tupperware parties. The intimate size of the Geffen Playhouse's Audrey Skirball Kenis Theathre allows Dixie to interact with the audience- both to tease a few select audience members and to share with them her insights into the ambition and resilience symbolized by her product. This 2008 Drama Desk nominated show is an irreverent riot and yet does make the audience think about the communal and humanizing nature of parties as well as the significant contribution that Brownie Wise, inventor of the Tupperware party, made to the women cut adrift when the end of World War II cast them (temporarily) out of the workforce. The show was consistently hilarious with only moments between laughs. Dixie has a fantastic presence on stage and improvises flawlessly. Some of the unscripted banter with the audience were real highlights of the show. Be prepared for some snorts and spurts of laughter from her off-color humor. I’d be happy to attend another one of Dixie’s parties anytime!

Playing July 9 through August 3 at the Geffen Playhouse-10866 Le Conte Ave. LA, CA 90024 geffenplayhouse.com 310-208-5454 dixiestupperwareparty.com

You can purchase all the containment needs of your wildest fantasies after the play- no pressure though!

Broadway Casts I Want to Come To LA ATTN: @CTGLA @Pantages

Every year when the Tony's are on TV I watch and see all the Broadway shows I hope and pray will come to Los Angeles with their Broadway casts. Someday I hope to go to New York and see a shows there but until that day I cross my fingers, rub my rabbit foot (and artificial one, cause that's just cruel), and pray to the theatre gods that I will see some of these shows in the years to come on a stage near me with their broadway casts.

Last night's Tony broadcast left me with this list,so here in no particular order.

BEAUTIFUL
A musical about the life of Carole King. I love Carole King and I love the film GRACE OF MY HEART that was loosely based on her life. I heard about this play before it opened and I was hoping it would be great and I guess it is

AFTER MIDNIGHT
A musical about the Cotton Club. This looks like a great show full of all my favorite old standards. I'm guessing it's all the club scenes in the film THE COTTON CLUB only more so. The cast doesn't hurt either, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, and Fantasia.

A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER
A distant heir to a family fortune apparently goes about clearing the intermediaries with what they discribe as, charm and a dash of murder. The number they did on the Tony's was hysterical.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
This is described as a rock musical about a fictional rock band with a transgender lead singer. There is a film I have never seen but have heard is also wonderful. It stars the unstoppable Neil Patrick Harris, who performed a number from the show that was brilliant.

I'm sure there are many great straight plays too, but I love the musicals. If you have any further recommendations please let me know!

The Drowsy Chaperone Film News

I first saw The Drowsy Chaperone when it made it's US premiere at The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles way back in 2005. With the original cast and Bob Martin in the role of Man In The Chair, he also co wrote the play with Don McKellar. The music is by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. It had been playing at theatres in Canada since 1998 but some how took almost 10 years to come to the United States.

I've only ever seen it the once, but I still remember how much I adored it. So when Geoffrey Rush mentioned in passing, during an interview for his new film THE BOOK THIEF, that he was working on a film version I nearly swooned. I will definitely be dogging whichever studio is doing it to see the earliest possible screening.

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE begins with a man in a chair listening to his favorite cast album. Slowly the stage around him becomes the Broadway stage of this 1928 musical. Throughout the play the man in the chair narrates the mad cap goings on.

Geoffrey Rush was in the original Australian cast in 2010, I feel for them having to wait an additional 5 years after us to get this play, as the Man In The Chair. He is now working on a film and I have heard some noise about Hugh Jackman signing on to play the Latin Lover character in the play within the play, pictured above from another production. I can totally see Jackman doing this character.

This is all the news I have at the moment but I'll keep updating as I get more info. In the mean time go see, the amazing film, THE BOOK THIEF. Maybe if Geoffrey gets lots of money from it we'll see THE DROWSY CHAPERONE that much quicker.

Based on various interviews it sounds like it will be going into production in early 2014. If you're not convinced here's a commercial for the New York  production.

Peter And The Starcatcher at The Ahmanson

I'm very excited to be invited by the Center Theatre Group to opening night of the 5 time Tony award winning musical Peter And The Starcatcher tonight at The Ahmanson Theatre , here in LA. It's a prequel to Peter Pan and is based on the book by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson.

Here's the synopsis:

The imaginative play tells the tale of an orphan who climbs aboard the good ship Neverland and heads to a faraway place, where he finds love, friendship, and, ultimately, himself. “Peter and the Starcatcher” is comprised of a company of 12 actors playing more than a hundred unforgettable characters, all on a journey to answer the century-old question: How did Peter Pan become The Boy Who Never Grew Up?

All that and a musical too! Hoping it's a fun show. Based on the picture below, I think that's a pretty safe bet.

My Review- This was a really fun show. The set is minimalist and amusingly plays with what it has to represent rooms, door ways, the ocean, etc... I was under the impression this show was only for adults, because of the posters that read "A grown up prequel to Peter Pan" But that is incorrect. The play would be fun for kids too. I will say that like must children's film these days it has many references that would go over the kids heads, but as far as content it is totally appropriate for all audiences.

I can definitely recommend this as a great romp!

Ticket Prices: $20 - $110 (Ticket prices are subject to change.) Tickets are available by calling Center Theatre Group Audience Services at (213) 972-4400, in person at the Center Theatre Group box
office or online at www.CenterTheatreGroup.org. Hot Tix: $20 each may be purchased in advance or, subject to availability, on the day of performance at the box office (no checks). Groups: (213) 972-7231. Deaf community: Information & charge, TDD (213) 680-4017.

In celebration of "Talk Like a Pirate Day," save 50% on "Peter and the Starcatcher" tickets in the front mezzanine (Rows C-G) for performances from December 3-5, 2013 (including opening night) at the Ahmanson Theatre.

A Parallelogram at The Mark Taper

Last night I was invited to review the opening night of A Parallelogram at The Mark Taper Forum. Written by the Pulitzer prize and Tony winning author Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park) and directed by Tony winning director Anne D. Shapiro (Osage County).

The story centers around Bee, a woman who seems to be bouncing through time, trying to rearrange her life as it unravels. It's a bizarre premise, but intriguing. Is it really possible to change your future? Bee's gonna give it a try.

The play is very well acted, and the audience I saw it with were laughing quite a bit. Though the subject matter is serious it is humorously delivered. It could easily be an episode of The Twilight Zone. It has that same quality of realism and the other worldly, and what would you do if the two collided.

A Parallelogram runs through August 18

Anything Goes at The Ahmanson

Cole Porter's, 2011 Tony winning, Anything Goes opens at The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles tonight. This a great show full of amazing songs, like “You’re the Top,” “Friendship,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and “Anything Goes.”. I've seen other productions and know that it is a fell good, toe tapping good time. I can't wait to see it again tonight.

Here's the synopsis:

When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love… proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail.

I'm going to do my best not to sing along.

Geffen 2012-2013 season

I am so excited about the Geffen Playhouse's 2012-2013 season. They are going for a marathon 8 show season, with world premieres and old favorites. As always there is something for everyone drama, comedy, and music. Another great thing about both of their theatres is that they are very intimate, with no bad seats.

So enjoy this amazing line up!

More than five decades later, Vera’s influence on race, film and feminism has seeped its way into pop-culture. But who is the real Vera Stark? Part comedy and part commentary, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s West Coast premiere uses today’s fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend.

Coney Island Christmas

Written by Donald Margulies

Directed by Bart DeLorenzo

Based on the short story “The Loudest Voice” by Grace Paley

In the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

World Premiere Commission * "A Jewish Christmas Show" * Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright

Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music and merriment in the world premiere of this new seasonal classic. A holiday show for people of all ages and all faiths, Coney Island Christmas introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who (much to her immigrant parents’ exasperation) is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter, the play captures a timeless and universal tale of what it means to be an American during the holidays.

The Gift

Written by Joanna Murray-Smith

Directed by Maria Aitken

In the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

American Premiere * From the Playwright of the 2010 Geffen Playhouse Hit The Female of the Species

Acclaimed Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith brings this comedic American premiere to the Geffen Playhouse. When two couples meet while vacationing at a ritzy resort, they instantly transition from strangers to the best of friends. Despite their almost comical differences – Ed and Sadie are middle-aged, rich and traditional, while Martin and Chloe are young artists glowing with their potential to change the world – they find themselves spending the rest of their week together. When one seemingly inconsequential event throws both their lives into a tailspin, the couples find themselves wrestling with a moral dilemma: while it’s human nature to want what you don’t have, is it unnatural to abandon something that you do? This provocative new work draws audiences in with a beguiling hilarity that gives way to an unsettling twist, posing searing questions rather than providing comfortable answers.

Miss Julie

Written by August Strindberg

Adapted and Directed by Neil LaBute

In the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

World Premiere Adaptationfrom Tony Nominee and Returning Geffen Artist, Neil LaBute

August Strindberg’s classic play about sex, greed and manipulation is adapted by the modern master of such tantalizing topics: Neil LaBute. This scandalous turn of the century play that chronicles the night-long flirtation and seduction between the wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s footmen was banned in Britain until 1936. Set in its original time and place and featuring one of theater’s most commanding female characters, this world premiere adaptation couples provocateurs Strindberg and LaBute to capture the timeless consequences of passion and power.

American Buffalo

Written by David Mamet

Directed by Randall Arney

In the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

New Production from the Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director * Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright

One of Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s defining works, American Buffalo was instantly hailed as a new American classic when it opened on Broadway in 1975. Now, Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney takes a fresh look at these misguided misfits who are a little out of luck and way out of their league as they plot the theft of a rare coin collection. As the time of the heist approaches, tension and anticipation build revealing loyalties and testing friendships. Negotiating explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness, this play, which has not had a major Los Angeles production in more than a decade, promises a mesmerizing night whether seeing it for the first time or rediscovering this groundbreaking work.

The Judy Show – My Life as a SitcomStarring Judy Gold

Written by Judy Gold & Kate Moira Ryan

Directed by Amanda Charlton

In Association with Daryl Roth and Eva Price

In the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

West Coast Premiere Comedy

Judy Gold has always dreamt big. Maybe because she is BIG (and by that, we mean tall). This six foot three inch Jewish mother of two is bringing her big, critically acclaimed off-Broadway hit to LA. A nonstop 90-minute ride, The Judy Show is Gold's chance to broadcast her hilarious life story through the sitcoms we all knew and loved. As an awkward kid growing up in New Jersey, Gold has fantasies of running away to The Brady Bunch house or climbing aboard the The Partridge Family bus, all while unabashedly recounting the mix of riotous, touching and otherwise embarrassing moments that taught her The Facts of Life. Infused with pop-culture references as well as her signature irreverent humor, The Judy Show covers life, love, showbiz and ultimately her quest for her very own show - all in a way that might make Rhoda proud.

Yes, Prime Minister

Written by Antony Jay & Jonathan Lynn

Directed by Jonathan Lynn

In the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse

American Premiere * First Production after the Acclaimed West End Run

This quirky comedy based on the acclaimed BBC television series draws liberally - and conservatively - from current events as well as age-old political gaffes. Join the mostly clueless Prime Minister and an always hilarious cast of characters, ranging from the morally questionable Kumranistan ambassador to the scheming cabinet secretary, as they sort out the world’s problems despite their best intentions. Will this coalition of comedy manage to unite Europe under one currency, resolve the energy crisis, solve the debt crisis, and avoid a crisis in the press? Maybe not, but Brits and Yanks alike can bank on the laughs in this uproarious political satire.

American Idiot at The Ahmanson

Center Theatre Group invited me to see the opening night of American Idiot. It's an amazing show with a Green Day score.

It reminded me quite a bit of Hair. With a group of young adults trying to figure out their way through the trials of growing up. It's definitely what I would classify as a Rock Opera with blaring guitars and pounding drums.

There are some extremely striking visuals. One aerial scene seemed like the actors were almost swimming. Another dance scene using one of those rubber cords to tie off the arm for injections, two dancers wrap it around one another in various ways. It falls somewhere between ballet and modern dance.

This is a great show to introduce tweens, teens, and young adults to theatre. It does have a copious amount of cursing, drugs, and sex; like any good rock opera should, but it's not too graphic. Still I wouldn't say it's appropriate for young children.

8 at The Ebell Theatre

8 will be performed at the Ebell Theatre March 3 to benefit The American Foundation for Equal Rights. The play is based on the court testimony from the trial to overturn California's Proposition 8, to legalized same sex marriage.

The play will be read by an all star cast including George Clooney, Martin Sheen, Jane Lynch and Jessie Tyler Ferguson among others.

This is a one night only benefit performance so the ticket are quite expensive. $500 and $1000. There are other packages that soar up to $250,000. If you have the means I highly recommend attending.

If you find this out of your reach but would like to contribute to the cause visit The American Foundation for Equal Rights website. They will gladly take any donations, I am sure.

Ahmanson Season Tickets

Every year for my mother's birthday, my sister and I get her season tickets to The Ahmanson (a theatre here in LA). Over the years we've seen some real stinkers, or things we just didn't care for but there was always a balance of good things too, that made it worth it. But this year I got the subscriber packet and was stunned by the lameness of the season. All but one show is several years if not decades old. Here's the line up, in no particular order. Dream Girls, Spamalot, Mary Poppins, South Pacific, and the only show I want to see August:Osage County.
Now how wise was this in a year where people are looking to eliminate extra spending? All of these shows have been done to death. Anyone who goes to the theatre regularly has seen them all. Just one of these in the season would have been fine, but to make it the whole season is ridiculous. Suffice to say I am forgoing season tickets this year and will just go see the one show I want to see.
I thought we might switch to The Pantages (another theatre in town) but their season is looking pretty dismal too. Is it possible there are no good shows??? Are they trying to save money by getting cheaper shows?? What's going on??? Until they get it sorted I'll be buying tickets for individual shows and I advise you to too.

Spring Awakening in LA

I went to see Spring Awakening Wednesday night, but with Thanksgiving am just getting to tell you about it. I think the music and dancing were amazing, in those respects possibly the best I've ever seen. The music was pretty rocking, not that Disney sounding singing that has been so popular the last several years. The dancing was explosive.

But I have to say I was annoyed by the story. I'll preface this by saying the play is based on a book that was written in the 1900's. But they really could have improved the female characters. There are 6 female characters, 2 of whom are really just there to move the story along and you don't know anything about. One older character who plays all the adult parts (mothers, teacher, etc..) the other 3 female characters are the worst kind of depiction of women, they are victims who do nothing to try to help themselves. The male characters make choice to navigate their lives with good and bad results but at least they make choices, the girls just let things happen to them. It's pretty pathetic. I just feel they could have written these characters with some strength.

The depiction of women has always drawn my attention, but now that I have a daughter I'm even more aware of it, and appalled by it!

It was great to see so many teens and 20 somethings at the theatre, instead of the usual blue hair crowd. The show does have some pretty sexual material including nudity. I wondered how comfortable some of the parent teen viewers were, they did seem quiet at intermission.
