Jerry Lewis Print Ceremony Pictures #TCMFF

Jerry Lewis Print Ceremony TCL (Grauman's) Chinese Theatre

Jerry Lewis had his hand and feet prints immortilized at TCL (Grauman's) Chinese Theatre today. Once again because of the TCM Classic Film Fest I was there. This was a quick ceremony with Robert Osborne introducing Quentin Tarantino who then introduced Jerry Lewis as his favorite childhood actor. But once Jerry took the stage the hi jinks began.

First Jerry heckled the stage hand who was removing the podium, insisting he bring it back.

Then telling him to take it away, then to bring it back, then to move it around the stage. Finally asking the kid how long he'd been in show business.

Then it was time for the cement, but Jerry needed to stretch first. The more he hammed it up the more the audience laughed, so this went on for awhile.

Here Quentin comes up to shake hands with Jerry and it results in their hands getting all tangled. Then Jerry starts chewing on Quentin's hands. In the end they're both laughing and holding hands with fingers interlaced.

Jerry was very proud to have his daughter witness the ceremony. He asked her to stand up and take a bow.

After having the press yell at him for about a half hour to look this way and that Jerry asked for his camera and started taking pictures of us. He asked one member of the press to stand and then asked if he felt like a schmuck standing while the rest of us sat.

I think everyone had a really good time, including Jerry! It wasn't as emotional as the ceremonies I have previously attended but it was by far the silliest.

TCL/Grauman's Chinese Theatre Renovation Pictures

Check out the new TCL/Grauman's Chinese Theatre! Here you can see how the screen is now set back a bit from the arch that it use to hang from.

Side curtains are now open so you can see the beautiful Xavier Cougat mural in silver on the brick walls, as well as, the red lanterns (that look more yellow in these shots unfortunately). The original floor was where the closest pillar to the screen ends.

If you've been in The Chinese Theatre before you remember how dark and dull  this light fixture had become. Not only is it beautifully restored but also lit with changing center colored lights. Gorgeous!

Here are some shots of the lobby. The latern in the entry way. Dorothy's dress from the Wizard Of Oz on display for the grand open of the new IMAX Chinese Theatre run of The Wizard Of Oz in IMAX and 3D.

TCL Grauman's Chinese Theatre Renovation Tour

I know a lot of visitors will be disappointed to find out Gauman's, now TCL, Chinese Theatre is closed this summer for renovations and installation of IMAX. But all is not lost, you can still tour the interior. Tours will vary based on the stage of construction. The day I went the auditorium was closed but there was a lot to see and learn even for a native Angeleno, like myself.

The first thing that surprised me was that the smaller light hanging from these light fixtures was originally a incense burner and in the early days of the theatre was used for that purpose. Can you imagine walking in to a theatre filled with the scent of incense. Grauman was really about the full sensory experience. The painted screens, on the walls, were done by actor Keye Luke known for his roles in everything from Charlie Chan movies to episodes of MASH.

Keye Luke isn't the only celebrity artist who contributed to the Chinese. There is a large mural in silver on the brick wall wings of the theatre painted by band leader Xavier Cugat. This is just a close up of one small part of it.

This is an almost entirely hidden painting on the ceiling on both side of the theatre near the restrooms in the wings. There is also a round portal design near it that can only be seen with the help of a flashlight. My camera could not be convinced that it was there and wouldn't take a picture. Which was a little spooky.....

I had always assumed these decorations were just props, but they're not. Grauman brought these artifacts (septer and chair) over from China. The mannequin is a good luck charm for movies that film in the Chinese. cast and crew rub her shoulder for good luck, so much so that the dress has been replaced multiple times. The headdress is orginal.

I love this display of film programs. They have great ones from recent premieres, like Lincoln. There are also ones from the early days including this Gold Diggers of 1933 program shaped like the coins that figure largely in Ginger Roger's, We're In The Money number. Good thing they had that under lock and key or I'd have been beyond tempted to thumb through it, smell it, and generally drool all over it.

Even the bathroom is famous at Grauman's. The beautiful ladies sitting room is all original from the butterflies on the walls to the stools. you can bet just about every female actress since 1927 has been in this room, which gives me a little rush of goose bumps everytime I think about it.

The men's room on the other hand is nothing special. I did ask to see it though, just because I've always wondered. It also has a smaller sitting room. Nothing in it is original except two paintings, which are nice but not that exciting.

For the more technically minded there are also projectors, film winders, an array of lenses and film types. In it's history Grauman's has shown everything from 16mm to Cinemiracle and now IMAX in the very near future. They are very up on saying the theatre has survived so long by staying current with the times, and that make sense, I'm hopefully they will continue to guard the old as they stay up with the new.

There were so many surprises in the handprint courtyard. For example, Kurt Douglas did his hand prints doing a hand stand and lowered himself to make a print of his famous chin. Unfortunately the cement artist didn't see this and thought it was a smudge and wiped it away. Many of the squares had secret stories. But I think my favorite is the time capsule that is in Greer Garson's 1942 Mrs Miniver square. It has no date for opening but i'st said to have copies of the film and script inside. Too bad we just missed the 70th anniversary....
There are still 110 space left for prints in the courtyard and with an average of just 4 a year, we can look forward to decades more of the ceremonies. I've been lucky enough to attend 3 handprint ceremonies and while they are just silly publicity, they are also a Hollywood tradition in a town that doesn't have many.

And finally just to feel in the know, these two theatre chairs that were in the lobby during my tour. As someone who has spent hours/days in this theatre watching movies I'm delighted to see them.  Both versions look extremely comfortable. The current side design was on them so we will assume they will make it through the renovation.

Jane Fonda TCL Grauman's Print Ceremony #TCMFF

One of my favorite parts of the TCM Film Festival is the hand print ceremony at The Chinese Theatre. This year the honoree was Jane Fonda. She brought her personality to the print by doing one hand in a peace sign. You gotta love it. Jane's prints will go right next to her father's, which is so touching.

Jane's son Troy Garrity spoke about how meaningful it is to him to be able to put his hand in his grandfather's prints, who died when he was 9. Also how he hopes that young women will take inspiration from standing in his mother's prints.

Next Lily Tomlin, Jane's 9 to 5 co star and close friend talked. Lily had the crowd laughing talking about Jane's frequent expression "we just have to make a leap of faith" saying that she does it so often it may be why she is in such great shape. Maybe we should all stay tuned for Jane's next exercise tape, Leap of Faith to toned thighs...

Finally the last speaker was Maria Shriver. She didn't give us any details but told us that she was 13 years old when she first met Jane. She went on to say that she appreciated Jane's example of coming from a famous family, and a famous marriage and coming through it whole.

When Jane came out she talked about how she had hoped as a young actress to someday get to do her prints, but as the years went by thought that the only way she was going to get to do her handprints in this town was if they repaved the sidewalk in front of her house.

She was very emotional about having her prints next to her father's. She told us how her father had always warned her about letting people in Hollywood walk all over her. Joking that now everyone could walk all over both of them.

Jane and Peter admiring her penmanship.

Jane, Peter, Shirley (Henry Fonda's widow), Troy Garrity

The whole gang looking very proud. The whole thing reminded me of a graduation ceremony. Very Sweet!

Grauman's Chinese Theatre Meme Monday

Life is long and I'm not always doing it right, but sometimes amazing things happen. Like this day I got to pose next to Kim Novak's hand and foot print cement at Grauman's. Going to South Africa next week is definitely something that will help make living this one life enough. Of course being a daughter, sister, wife and mother do that everyday.

Here's to making once enough!
