What To Watch In The #NewYear!

There are a few shows I am super excited about for 2016. And here they are.

DOWNTON ABBEY begins it's farewell season JANUARY 3RD on PBS.

We all love this show and are sad to see it go, but I look forward to finally seeing them all settled in their lives. Please god let Lady Edith get a happy ending at long last...

YOUNGER returns to TV Land for season 2 with a one hour season premier JANUARY 13TH.

Comedies I like are few and far between but this one is a real winner. If you didn't catch the first season you have almost 2 weeks to catch up - do so immediately!

BILLION is a new show coming to SHOWTIME you can stream the pilot starting JANUARY 1ST but it won't air on the network until JANUARY 17TH.

The show stars Damien Lewis + Paul Giamatti, which really is enough to recommend it, but it also features MAD MEN alum Maggie Siff (Rachel Menken Katz to this Mad Men uber fan). She is really great!

BILLIONS is about the financial world with Damien as a hedge fund guy and Giamatti as the US attorney who wants to bring him down. It is extremely intense and I will warn you the opening scene of the pilot has some VERY strong sexual/violent/gross content, but that is not the norm of the show. I highly recommend this one.

So there they are my top picks. There are a few other shows I'm curious about but not convinced about like VINYL (HBO Feb14) and X FILES (FOX Jan. 24).

Here's to a happy new year of television viewing!

Smithsonian Channel's Million Dollar American Princesses @SmithsonianChan #DowntonAbbey #TV

Million Dollar American Princesses on The Smithsonian Channel is a 3 part series premiering January 4th. It explores the time between the 1870s and the outbreak of World War One, when more than 200 daughters of America's new industrial millionaires marry into the money-strapped British aristocracy. They use their affluence, allure and ingenuity to their advantage, and they bring dramatic changes to the English ruling class and eventually the world.

The series is narrated by Elizabeth McGovern, our Lady Cora from Downton Abbey, whose character embodies just such an American heiress married to an English nobleman during that period. The series is fascinating for Downton Abbey fans. It's a great peak into what Cora's life in America and her tranistion to Lady might have been. It makes me long for a Downton Abbey prequel!

Episode Guide

MILLION DOLLAR AMERICAN PRINCESSES: CASH FOR CLASS
Premieres Sunday, January 4th at 8 p.m. ET/PT
The series begins with the gentility of the late Victorian period and a profile of America’s Jennie Jerome, whose son, Winston Churchill, was arguably the most famous statesman of the 20th century. Beautiful, educated and headstrong, Jennie met Lord Randolph Churchill at a dance, and it reportedly was love at first sight for both. Jennie was a wonderful spirit, writing to her betrothed: “I won’t marry you unless you let me do exactly as I like.” A Brooklyn-born heiress, she grew up in a Manhattan mansion worth $253 million (in today’s dollars, accounting for inflation), but still was not accepted by Manhattan society. In England, it was not much better. No matter how much of her father’s money was pumped into the family estate, Jennie was keenly aware of always being looked down upon by the gentry.

MILLION DOLLAR AMERICAN PRINCESSES: WEDDING OF THE CENTURY
Premieres Sunday, January 11th at 8 p.m. ET/PT
More than a century before paparazzi buzzed overhead in helicopters to take photos of celebrity weddings, people clamored for gossip about the unions of the fabulously rich and famous. Consuelo Vanderbilt – of those Vanderbilts – was reared to be a princess. As an American, she had no claim on title. Instead, her mother, who could give assertiveness training to any stage mother or tiger mom, groomed Consuelo for nobility. Once Consuelo was old enough, her mother sought a world stage for the girl, with no thought given to anything as superfluous as love. And so she was married off to the Duke of Marlborough on Nov. 6, 1895, at Manhattan’s St. Thomas Episcopal Church, while throngs ringed the block, hoping for a glimpse of them. Tabloid press was salacious then, too, and there were even stories about her undergarments. Theirs, though, was hardly a fairy tale marriage; in fact, she was late to the church because she was crying. At the altar, the duke never even glanced at her, which was, unfortunately, a preview of their relationship.

MILLION DOLLAR AMERICAN PRINCESSES: Movers and Shakers
Premieres Sunday, January 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
In the final installment of the series, the Jazz Age is in full swing and the Depression sets in. Through news clips and interviews, viewers learn about an infamous romance between an American and a member of British royalty that is considered one of the greatest love affairs in history. What else could it be when a king abdicates his throne for a woman? Edward VIII loved the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson more than his birthright. Historians acknowledge that his abdication may very well have been a boon for history. “I am perfectly sure that it is one of the best things that ever could have happened,” says Viscount John Julius Norwich, “because I think he was so stupid, and I think he was completely unfit to be king of England, particularly with the war coming on, because he was at this time talking to everyone about what a wonderful chap he thought Hitler was. So I think you could say Mrs. Simpson had saved the country, the empire, and quite possibly the world."

Cinderella Meets Downton Abbey #DowntonAbbey #Cinderella

PBS Downton Abbey Cast returns Jan 4th

Disney is premiering a new live action Cinderella film this Spring. Last week they released the first trailer and I noticed something...It stars some of my beloved Downton Abbey ladies! With Downton Abbey returning to PBS January 4th we won't have to wait to see them, but when it ends on March 1st we will only have to wait 2 weeks until March 13th, when CINDERELLA opens, to see them again.

Disney Cinderella with Lily James and Richard Maden

Obviously, Cinderella is played by Lily James who is the rebellious Lady Rose MacClare in Downton Abbey. There is also Sophie McShera as the wicked step sister Drizella, who we all know and love as Daisy from the Downton kitchen. The film also features some yet to be Downton Abbey actors including Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter. I think they should be able to muddle through.

Cinderella with Cate Blanchett, Sophia McShera, and Holliday Graiger

The film looks beautiful, based on the trailer.  Just the costumes in these posters released today give you a pretty good idea of the quality and detail of the film. I'm hoping Disney has given the traditional story a bit of a feminist spin. Disney has been really great about strong female characters in the last several years, so fingers crossed!

Cinderella Helena Bonham Carter
OK that is the end of my cross promotion. Can't wait for Downton Abbey January 4th and Cinderella March 13th. Keep the good stuff comin' everyone!

Downton Abbey Season 5 Sneak Peek #DowntonPBS @MasterpiecePBS

Downton Abbey is returning to PBS Masterpiece this January 2015. It's a long wait but here are a few glimpses into what is awaiting us. Of course there are no spoilers but we do see a new character and our babies are growing up! I can tell you that we will not be seeing Shirley Maclaine or Paul Giamatti this year, but that is as spoilery as I get.

Downton Abbey Branson and Sybie
Here is little Sybie with her father Branson, who hopeful will not be hooking up with that teacher from town. Is it me or does she seem like a bad egg?

Downton Abbey George and his nanny
Here's Matthew and Mary's son George. Hopefully him being pictured with his nanny isn't a clue that Mary is struggling with motherhood and her grief over Mathew's death. Or maybe she's just too busy juggling all her suitors. He sure is a cutie, it would be hard for anyone not to fawn all over him.

Downton Abbey Mr Carson and Mrs Hughes

It would be great if Mr Carson and Mrs. Hughes continued their torrid hand holding from last seasons beach trip! They really are the perfect couple.

Downton Abbey Cora and Simon Bricker
I'm very excited to see Richard E Grant will be joining the Downton cast. All I know is his character's name is Simon Bricker??? We'll just have to wait and see could he be a fling for Cora... Find out next time on Downton Abbey.

Downton Abbey Set Visit and Help The Philippines #DowntonPBS

Omaze raises money for charitable organizations with celebrity prizes. Now they're offering a Downton Abbey set visit to help the Philippine victims of the typhoon through Be The Change. You can buy as many entries as you want or just one for $10. The prize includes airfare and hotel for two in London. You must enter by February 20th, so step on it.

I'd like to get a picture like this one with every cast member. That's probably asking too much, how about just Barrow. I'm pulling for him to turn nice.

Anyway, you should all enter for a chance to win the Omaze  Downton Abbey Set Visit for the Philippines and if you win take me!

Good luck and here's a list of 10 reason to visit the set, from the cast, as if you needed any reasons???

Downton Abbey PBS January 5th

Downton Abbey returns to PBS for it's 4th season this Sunday, Jan. 5th. If you follow my twitter feed you know PBS was kind enough to send me an advance copy, so I have had the opportunity to see the entire season with the exception of the Christmas special. I can tell you this season is a humdinger! After several seasons some shows get a little tired but Downton has managed to come up with some truly surprising plot twists and I loved it and am dying to get my hands on the Christmas special, which has been promised some time in January. Though it won't air until late February. Sorry.

Will Lady Edith ever be lucky in love??
How will Lady Mary deal with widowhood?
I won't reveal any spoilers but as I mentioned on my podcast, Agents of Zeitgeist, before the holidays if you want to be up on some of the back story to the season you may want to bone up on the Teapot Dome Scandal of the early 1920s.

I've also heard that season 5 is already in the works, so rest assured we'll have plenty more adventures with the whole Downton gang. I still have my fingers crossed that they all have to move to America to live with Shirley Maclaine's character. It would be SO good.

Here's a sneak peak at some of the goings on this season. Spoiler free of course! But you do get a look at some of the new characters introduced this season.

Downton Abbey Revisited on PBS

Downton Abbey returns to PBS January 6th. Which feels like FOREVER. PBS is airing a behind the scenes look at Downton Abbey including some peaks at the new season, Downton Abbey Revisited will air Sunday, November 25.

I love hearing what creator Julian Fellows and all the cast have to say about this amazing show. Including the show origins, the costumes, sets, and locations. It's all hosted by the incredible Angela Lansbury. Which come to think of it would make an excellent Downton character herself.

The season promises to be everything we've come to expect and Downton Abbey Revisited could be just the thing to prime you for it. Here's a little trailer.

Just as a bonus for Elise's Rambling readers here are a few behind the scenes pics of my own, taken last summer at the PBS press tour. Such a kind cast.

Downton Abbey Season 3

So excited to have heard  tonight that Downton Abbey Season 3 will be returning to PBS Jan. 6 2013. We were also treated to a trailer that showed the family having very serious financial problems. Also Mary and Mathews marriage may be on the ropes. Finally, there were some great exchanges between the always fabulous Maggie Smith and Shirley MacLaine in the role of Cora's mother,Martha Levinson.

Apparently the trailer hadn't been seen by anyone but PBS staff until last night. After the trailer there was a cocktail party with the cast.

My first mission was to get to talk with Shirley MacLaine. She was very animated on the panel. I asked her if she had any plans to attend the TCM Film Festival. Neither she nor her representative would confirm anything other than she's been asked and has been out of town in years past. I begged a little and hope it will get her there.

Shirley had a great idea for the show. She suggested that if the Crawleys do lose all their money they should come to America to live with her character, Martha Levinson. I'd love to see that.

Then I was very happy to have a picture with Mr. Bates/ Brendan Coyle who was lovely. He also revealed that when he took the Facebook Downton Abbey, which character are you quiz meme, he was Mary.

Here is a picture of Mary Crawley/Michelle Dockery having a laugh with party goers. She seemed really fun and open to all the guests. But I didn't get a chance to speak with her personally.

Finally, here is Hugh Bonneville/ Robert Crawley showing us his Free Bates tshirt. I wish the trailer had revealed more about Bates' future. But I will have to wait till January.

If you've somehow not seen the show you have a few months to get caught up. I think I'll rewatch them too, just to be uber up on all the comings and goings and ups and downs at Downton Abbey.

January 6th can't come soon enough!

Downton Abbey on PBS Jan. 8, 2012

Well, I tweeted out that I was dying for Downton Abbey and PBS tweeted me back this preview, in the hopes of getting me through till the second season premieres January 8th, 2012.

Enjoy, I did
