This offer is valid at the historic El Cholo at 1121 S. Western Ave. in Los Angeles as well as at the El Cholo restaurants in Santa Monica, La Habra and Irvine.

Our history begins…

The story of El Cholo reads like many American successes. A hard working couple discovers an opportunity in a newly adopted city and proceeds to build a lasting family business. What gets lost between the lines are the joys and challenges, relationships of a family that expands five generations.

Our tale begins with Alejandro Borquez and his culinary gifted wife, Rosa. Alejandro had a hunch that Los Angeles would enjoy Rosa's cooking as much as he did - and he was right. The seed of Alejandro's inspiration has grown from the tiny original Sonora Cafe, opened in 1923 in downtown Los Angeles, to a multi-generational restaurant business that spreads across Southern California.

To our satisfaction, a great number of the ideas we promoted have become Mexican restaurant staples, from combination plates to nachos to margaritas made with premium tequilas. Our green corn tamales ‘
are legendary, available only during the summer months when sweet corn is at its peak.

What we've always believed, from Grandma Rosa's first Sonora-style enchiladas to today's fajitas and seasonal tamales, is that our food along with our history and warm genuine hospitality are what truly sets our restaurant apart.
