Burns and Novick's Prohibition on PBS

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's 3 part series, Prohibition premieres on PBS beginning this Sunday, October 2, 3, and 4th. I've been dying to see this ever since I heard Ken Burns talk about it last year. It's a marriage of my top two or three favorite things PBS/Burns and Kovick docs and classic film or in this case just talking about the old days. Though I'm sure there will be some clips of TCM fare.
I heard a rumor Mar Vista Mom will be playing a little drinking game during the show. A shot every time they say Volstead Act. That could get a little dangerous for a school night, so be sure to use the good bathtube gin.
Just knock twice and tell them Elise's Ramblings sent ya....

The Big C Season 2 Finale

Tonight is the season 2 finale of The Big C on Showtime. With each episode I have a bit of anxiety, will she get sicker...Even more so with the season finale.
Hopefully, we will have some loose ends tied up a bit more happily than last week.
If the show stays true to the original plan, I think there will only be 2 more seasons, one for each season of the year. Hopefully we'll get more if it continues to be sooo successful.

R.E.M Retiring

How sad R.E.M has announced their retirement and posted this statement.

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening,"

I always thought I would learn the words to "It's The End Of The World" but I guess it's too late now to ever sing along to it at one of their concerts....

Beware of Falling Satellite

NPR informed me this morning that a retired U.S. research satellite the size of a school bus will be falling to earth in the next few days. They say it will come down in many pieces. Apparently they are hopeful it will all land in the ocean, since that is the majority of our planet, but they are making no promises. So my advice is keep an eye to the sky.

RIP Cliff Robertson

I am so sad to hear the passing of Cliff Robertson. He is in one of my favorite classic films Sunday In New York. If you've yet to see it, do it now.
He has so many great films, PT 109, 3 Days of the Condor, Picnic, just off the top of my head. I'm sure there would have been many more if it weren't for his black listing in 1977, due to reporting a forgery by a Columbia executive.
Still he had an amazing career, and I will continue to enjoy his films. I wish he could have been at one of the TCM Film Fests.

UPDATE:

The following is a complete schedule of TCM’s Sept. 19 memorial tribute to Cliff Robertson (all times Eastern):

6 a.m. – Picnic (1955), with William Holden and Kim Novak; directed by Joshua Logan.
8 a.m. – Autumn Leaves (1956), with Joan Crawford and Vera Miles; directed by Robert Aldrich.
10 a.m. – Underworld U.S.A. (1961), with Dolores Dorn and Beatrice Kay; directed by Samuel Fuller.
11:45 a.m. – Gidget (1959), with Sandra Dee and James Darren; directed by Paul Wendkos.
1:30 p.m. – Sunday in New York (1963), with Jane Fonda and Rod Taylor; directed by Peter Tewksbury.
3:30 p.m. – The Best Man (1964), with Henry Fonda, Edie Adams and Lee Tracy; directed by Franklin J. Shaffner.
5:30 p.m. – PT 109 (1963), with Ty Hardin, James Gregory and Robert Culp; directed by Leslie H. Martinson.

The Playboy Club, Mad Men, and One Bunny

The Playboy Club premieres on NBC on September 19th. I know Gloria Steinem has asked that it be boycotted, and my first instinct IS to do whatever Gloria says, but then I know Gloria wouldn't like that kind of blind obedience. Either way I have to watch at least one to see if it is glorification or entertaining historical documentation.
Now, regarding the title of this post. Has anyone else noticed that Toni (Naturi Naughton), Lane Pryce's main bunny squeeze from Mad Men is also cast on The Playboy Club??? I'm happy to see her get more work, but this may be taking the "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" a bit too far.

TNT The Closer Canelled Update

The Closer airs it's summer finale this Monday on TNT. I thought that would be the series Finale, but I just heard that not only will there be 6 more episodes in November but another 6 in Summer 2012. After which Mary McDonnell will premiere her spin off Major Crimes.
All of which is very good news indeed!!

Family Game Night

Family Game Night's new season starts tomorrow night on the Hub. This is one of my daughter's (7) favorite shows, and truthfully it's fun to watch for me too. If you haven't seen it, it's a family game show where they play modified board games to win points and prizes. It's family friendly in the extreme.
Check your local listings and enjoy.
